2021: Bisti Badlands for Beginners

Dear Isaac and Maia,

I am months behind with this blog. I wanted to finish the spring break road trip blog – three months late. We traveled from flat-land Chambers through some more mountainous areas and then to the Bisti Badlands.

It was a little stormy on the trip that day. I was a little nervous about the badlands – not just because of the weather, but also because people hike out there and get lost. However, I didn’t plan to go for a very long hike so I took a compass.

When we stopped to get out, Moki jumped out and ran away. I was afraid for a minute that we would lose him, but I hollered something about treats and he just stood and let me catch him.

We followed a fence to a wash. We followed the wash for a little bit – maybe half a mile. I didn’t want to get lost and wasn’t sure how Moki would react if the dark skies turned to rain.

The structures are cool shale – there are ones that are way more magnificent than the ones we got to. However, we got a taste of it. If there had been enough sun to make shadows, the photos would be better. It felt like the moon or something.

After the hike, we got to Farmington and went to Petco to get Moki a more escape-proof harness. However, he didn’t want to escape that badly now – but he spooks easily (still, 3 months later). The motel had a broken credit card machine (I had to pay cash), no internet and no hot water. Jeez! That is why the blog is so late.

Now, I need to catch up our road trip through New Mexico last week. Oh, yea, and our camping trips this year.

Love, Grandma H
