Dear Isaac and Maia,
Today was the first day I didn’t have to take down and re-set up camp since we left! However, I didn’t want to go to Pearl Lake State Park on the weekend because it is overrun with tourists. This was Grandma’s vision for her lake, but I prefer to visit when it is a tad quieter.

So, after a more leisurely morning, we headed to Tombstone Trail. I enjoy this trail because it is relatively easy for the dogs and has some great views of Steamboat Lake. It was threatening rain and there was thunder as we headed back. I am a fairly brave soul – but mountain thunder still puts a chill in my bones. I know too many stories of people taking silly chances.

When we got back to the car, we headed to Hahns Peak for lunch. Hahns Peak Cafe was open and the porch is dog friendly. The rain passed over and we had a great lunch listening to live music. Yes, I had a margarita and dessert for lunch! Why not? My last real meal was at Flaming Gorge Resort! I was marveling at Kokopelli and all the changes she had made since her rescue from the hoard just 6 months prior. She looks so happy.

The afternoon brought some reading and an evening hike down the trail near the campground called Willow Creek Trail. I remember my aunts and Grandma talking about going fishing on Willow Creek when I was growing up. I think we logged 2-3 miles today for the Hiker’s 365 Challenge. It was so nice to have camp all setup – and guess what? I had a “real meal” at the other restaurant for dinner while the dogs waited in the car. Of course, I saved a bite for them.
PS – On my mind is the new rescue we are scheduled to pick up in a few days before returning home. I am both happy and scared to be adding a 3rd dog to the pack.
Love Ya’all, Cathy Hartt (Grandma Hartt)
